It’s funny. Lofi hip-hop is made to calm you down and increase your concentration. For me though, I can’t help but feel anxious when I start listening to it. Listening now does nothing but remind me that I have work to do on this project.
This effect of stress that I feel listening to lofi hip-hop had already started a little bit due to my mind associating lofi hip-hop with school work. Because of this, I questioned further why lofi used to do the trick for me but fails to now.
In my last post, I went into some detail as to how producers provoke emotion in their music and whether or not artificial intelligence could match the same level of emotion. This time, I want to figure out how lofi affects different people and how it affects me.
After reading some comments that people left on my last blog, the concept that music affected people differently stood out to me very clearly. Obviously, everyone is different and I knew that, but before getting some input, I hardly realized that some people can't concentrate at all listening to any type of music. Personally, I'm on the other end of the spectrum and can concentrate while listening to pretty much anything.
I think that the difference to this is emotional tolerance. A different commenter mentioned how "emotions serve as a distraction from work and often prohibit concentration." When I listen to music, I don't pull that much emotional weight from it.

I listen to a lot of sad music when I'm not sad and exciting music when I'm not excited. A lot of people think I'm weird for that, but I just listen to whatever I want to listen to. Music just doesn't affect me emotionally the same way it does for other people. In fact, music doesn't affect any two people the exact same way emotionally. I know people whose whole mood depends on what they're listening to. When I look at lofi hip-hop from the same perspective, it helps me understand how some people might not be able to listen to it to concentrate or why they might not like it at all.
How does music affect you? Do you listen to music while you do work or do you find it too distracting? I'm eager to learn how different people treat music and whether or not they draw lots of emotion from it or just a little.
Until next time, I'll see you later.
